A respectable household is shocked when a strange police inspector visits them shortly after dinner... and proceeds to unravel their prejudices and lies. Through this almost surreal murder-mystery, Priestley interweaves social comment with a gripping story that twists and turns every few pages.

The book includes an illustrated Character List (Dramatis Personae), 132 pages of story artwork, and fascinating support material that details the life and work of J.B. Priestley - all beautifully presented in color.

This edition presents the entire play with simplified US English, ideal for ELL students, reluctant readers, or for students who want a quick understanding of the play before tackling the full text. Artwork and page numbers are identical to the Original Text edition, enabling differentiation in the classroom.

Back Jacket

On a spring evening in 1912, in the English town of Brumley, the wealthy Birling family is celebrating the engagement of their daughter Sheila to Gerald Croft, son of Sir George and Lady Croft. It is a joyous occasion, but their pleasant party takes a turn for the worse when they receive an unexpected visit from a police inspector investigating the suicide of a young woman. Surely none of these respectable people could have anything to do with her sad fate...
...or could they?

J. B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls is a masterpiece of English drama. Written toward the end of World War II, it cleverly combines an intriguing plot line with insightful social commentary and superb characterization, resulting in a truly thought-provoking piece of theater.
