Dramatic Lyrics - Hardcover

by Robert Browning (Author)

Dramatic Lyrics is a collection of poems written by the renowned Victorian poet, Robert Browning. The book was first published in 1842 and contains some of Browning's most famous works, including ""My Last Duchess"" and ""The Pied Piper of Hamelin"". The poems in Dramatic Lyrics are written in a dramatic monologue style, where the speaker of the poem is not the poet himself, but rather a fictional character. Through these characters, Browning explores themes such as love, jealousy, power, and morality. In ""My Last Duchess"", for example, the speaker is a wealthy Duke who is showing a portrait of his deceased wife to a visitor. Through his words, we learn that he was jealous of her attention to other men and ultimately had her killed. Similarly, in ""The Pied Piper of Hamelin"", the speaker is the Pied Piper himself, who is seeking revenge on the town of Hamelin for not paying him for ridding their town of rats. Browning's use of dramatic monologue is considered innovative for its time and has influenced many poets and writers since. Dramatic Lyrics remains a classic work of Victorian poetry and a must-read for anyone interested in the genre.Oh Galuppi, Baldassaro, this is very sad to find! I can hardly misconceive you; it would prove me deaf and blind; But although I take your meaning, 'tis with such a heavy mind! This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
