Les Anomalies - Paperback

by Maria El-Aswad (Author)

The debut poetry collection of Maria El-Aswad, Les Anomalies challenges social norms surrounding the othered and the marginalized.

A striking debut collection by experienced poet Maria El-Aswad, the poems of Les Anomalies represent over ten years of reflection on the author's life and experiences with the concept of social anomalies. Featuring explorations of what it means to be regarded as an anomaly, each poem unearths truths about how society "others" those who are different. With powerful imagery and a deeply personal look into the idea of being a stand-out among conformity, this title is a can't-miss powerhouse of beautiful language and perceptive cultural study.

The book is divided into four sections, each representing an aspect of El-Aswad's life. Topics range from the author's experience growing up in Lebanon and her exposure to injustices and discrimination there, to her own existential questioning and grappling with questions about social norms. With themes including love, pain, culture, growth, and even relationships with pets, El-Aswad paints a holistic picture of what being different from others can look like, and how those who are anomalies can find meaning and connection.

Ultimately, these poems aim to help marginalized people and communities feel at home with themselves-to feel understood, respected, and cared for. With its heartfelt honesty and receptive message, Les Anomalies is perfect for the poetry lover, and for anyone who needs to know that they belong.
