A deeply transformative and personal account of one young woman's journey to rediscover herself through the powerful and cathartic experience of the "solo quest."
Set against the backdrop of the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii, British Columbia), this inspiring memoir recounts Erika's first solo experience with Rediscovery International-a groundbreaking youth project founded in 1978 to help local Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth overcome challenges such as substance abuse, delinquency, and family disruption.
The Rediscovery program offers an extraordinary opportunity for youth to reconnect with nature and themselves through unique activities like building their own shelter, foraging for food, starting a fire, and cooking their own meals. The "solo quest" is a life-changing journey, often lasting from 12 to 24 hours, that helps youth develop self-reliance, resilience, and a deeper sense of purpose.
In this moving story, Erika takes readers through her own solo quest and how this experience reshaped her life, providing the strength and clarity she needed to face her personal challenges and move forward with confidence. My First Solo is not just a tale of survival in the wilderness, but a profound narrative of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment
