Other Short Stories - A Collection of Ghostly Tales (Fantasy and Horror Classics) - Paperback

by M. R. James (Author)

From the mind of M. R. James, the scholar-writer who redefined the ghost story for the 20th century and founded the 'antiquarian ghost story' genre, comes a collection of his rarer, but equally chilling, works. Other Short Stories gathers tales that explore the quieter corners of his vast, terrifying imagination.

These stories showcase James' unique genius for building palpable dread from the most mundane settings, proving that terror can lurk in rural lanes, academic halls, and even within the very fabric of the physical world:

• Wailing Well: A reckless exploration of a desolate well proves that ancient warnings about the dead are chillingly real.

• Rats: A brief but visceral tale of infestation and revulsion that hints at a darker, supernatural truth.

• The Experiment: A chilling demonstration of a scholar's ill-advised attempt to invoke the spirit world.

• The Malice of Inanimate Objects: An unsettling exploration of seemingly benign items carrying a persistent, spiteful will.

• A Vignette: A sharp, unnerving glimpse of terror, delivered with James's signature economy.

This collection is a must-have for devotees of classic ghost stories and supernatural fiction, offering deeper insight into the unsettling world of the greatest English master of creeping dread.
