While much has been written on the nation building Erie Canal of the nineteenth century, much less has covered the third iteration of the waterway, the New York State Barge Canal. Deemed a historic corridor by the Federal Parks system in 2000, the Empire State's canal system has been in continuous operation since 1825, longer than any other man made transportation system in North America.

Author Biography

Susan Peterson Gateley is a native Upstate New Yorker, former teacher and icthyoplankton taxonomist, who single-handed the wooden sloop Ariel in search of stories for boating and nature magazines for seventeen years. In 1996, she acquired a different boat and partner and added Gateley to her name. Her articles about Upstate waters have run in numerous local and national publications, and she has authored a half dozen titles on Lake Ontario. She has a master's degree in fisheries science and has sailed coastal waters, Lake Ontario and, more recently, the New York Canal System, with vessels ranging from fourteen to forty-seven feet.
