by Ricarda Huch (Author)
The year is 1906, and the governor of Saint Petersburg, Yégor Rasimkara, has closed the university as a result of student protests and has taken refuge in his country house, where he intends to protect himself and his family from death threats. It's all in vain, because the man his wife has chosen to watch over her safety is plotting behind her back. Capable of gaining the trust, admiration and even love of family members, will he succeed in fulfilling the mission entrusted to him? Brilliant and foreboding, this literary classic is a gem among historical novels, which can also be read as a crime novel, full of forebodings. Ricarda Huch discovers herself as a character writer at the height of Dostoievski.
