St. Proterius remains a controversial figure in the history of Christianity. His arrival in the Roman city resulted in a massive riot, as the Coptic church saw this as illicit Imperial intervention. For his part, St. Proterius sought to re-incorporate the Egyptian church into the other major Christian sees, including that of Rome. His letter here is directed to Pope Leo I regarding the political climate the was present in the church in the 5th century.
