Myths And Tales Of The Chiricahua Apache Indians is a comprehensive collection of traditional stories and legends from the Chiricahua Apache people, compiled and edited by Morris Edward Opler. The book includes a wide range of tales, including creation myths, hero stories, animal fables, and supernatural legends. Each story is presented in its original form, with Opler's expert commentary providing context and interpretation for modern readers. The book also includes a detailed introduction to Chiricahua Apache culture and history, as well as notes on the sources and variations of each story. Myths And Tales Of The Chiricahua Apache Indians is an essential resource for anyone interested in Native American folklore and mythology. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Back Jacket

Opler conducted field work among the Chiricahuas in the American Southwest, as he had earlier among the Jicarillas. The result is a definitive collection of their myths. They range from an account of the world destroyed by water to descriptions of puberty rites and wonderful contests. The exploits of culture heroes involve the slaying of monsters and the assistance of Coyote. A large part of the book is devoted to the irrepressible Coyote, whose antics make cautionary tales for the young, tales that also allow harmless expression of the taboo. Other striking stories present supernatural beings and 'foolish people.'
